Good Werks

Today I had the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with the women at Vickery Trading Company (VTC). VTC is a social business providing vocational training, personal development, and fair wages to refugee women, right here in Dallas. For many of the Associates in the program, VTC has the privilege of handing them their very first paycheck. This income provides for needs such as food, clothing and shelter for the Associates and their families.

1 in 5 children in North Texas live in food-insecure households. Today, the Good Werks Project volunteered to stock shelves at Our Community Pantry. Our Community Pantry is located in an abandoned former liquor store in South Dallas. Our Community Pantry is operated by the North Texas Food Bank and is currently serving a balanced variety of groceries including fresh dairy, produce and frozen meats to over 400 families per week.

Yesterday, the Good Werks Project got to spend the morning at Bonton Farms. I've gotten to tour the farm and volunteer once before, so I was excited to get to spend some time on the farm and introduce Bonton Farms to the rest of the Public Werks, Inc. team.

The month of May is National Foster Care Awareness month. Every day 1,200 kids in the United States enter the foster care system. Often, when a child enters foster care, they are given two trash bags to carry any belongings that they are able to bring. Together We Rise is attempting to change that with their Sweet Case program.
